Hard Work (Recommended by Joost Pollmann)


Two recent issues of comics magazines deal with the  dynamic social situation and the changing role of work & labour: The Workburger International Comics Anthology is a special edition  of the Slovenian Comic Zine Stripburger, that was curated by comic artist Igor Hofbauer. The list of contributing artists is long, among them Max Andersson from Sweden, Kaja Avberšek from Slovenia, Bruno Borges from Portugal, Paul Ashley Brown from Great Britain, Peter Kuper from North America and Daniel Zezelj from Croatia. The Anthology is accompanied by the touring multimedia exhibition Attention, work! , which starts on 7th November  at the Coal mining museum of Slovenia in Velenje and runs until until 22th of December.

Also the latest issue Nr. 5 of The Cartoon Picayune, an anthology magazine of comic journalism centers around that subject. It has four stories on a theme of Hard Work: Andy Warner returns with a story about sex workers in San Francisco fighting to change their legal status. Emi Gennis takes us back with her historical comic about the Radium Girls of the 1930s. Erik Thurman and Josh Kramer round out the issue with two shorter stories about the hard work of South Korean coffee shops.
